Neutering: When and Why for Dogs & Cats
Neutering (spaying females, castrating males) is one of the most common procedures in veterinary practice—and for good reason. It offers a range of medical and behavioural benefits, and it helps prevent unplanned litters.
Benefits at a glance
Dogs: can reduce roaming and hormone‑driven behaviours; lowers risk of pyometra (females) and certain cancers; eliminates false pregnancies; may reduce prostate issues in males.
Cats: reduces spraying/roaming, helps prevent fighting and related infections; prevents pyometra in females; reduces risk of certain reproductive cancers.
When should I neuter my pet?
Dogs: timing depends on sex, breed, and size. Many small to medium breeds are commonly neutered around 6–12 months. For some large/giant breeds, later timing may be advised—speak to us for a personalised plan.
Cats: often neutered around 4–6 months. Indoor-only cats can be scheduled flexibly; outdoor cats are often neutered earlier to prevent mating and roaming.
Pre‑op considerations
Health check and weight assessment.
Fasting instructions for the day of the procedure.
Microchipping is ideal while under anaesthesia if not already done.
The day of surgery
Day surgery under general anaesthetic.
Pain relief is provided; your pet goes home the same day with a care plan.
Recovery & aftercare
Keep activity controlled for the period we recommend (usually 7–14 days).
Monitor the incision for redness, swelling, or discharge.
Use a buster collar or body suit as directed.
Pain medication as prescribed.
Common questions
Will it change my pet’s personality? Not their core temperament—but hormone‑driven behaviours may reduce.
Will my pet gain weight? Weight gain is not inevitable—calorie control and exercise keep them trim.
Is it safe? It’s a routine procedure with modern anaesthesia and analgesia; risks are low and we review your pet’s health in advance.
