Your dog has just undergone surgery. Now, it’s time for rest and recovery.
If you have scanned the QR code on your discharge sheet, your dog is likely back home with you or on their way. The next few days are crucial for healing. This guide expands on your discharge sheet to help you understand exactly what is normal and what to watch out for.

1. The First 24-48 Hours: The "Groggy" Phase
It is completely normal for your dog to feel the effects of the anaesthetic for 24 to 48 hours.

  • Drowsiness: Your dog will likely be sleepy. This is normal. Let them rest in a quiet, warm place.

  • Coughing: A slight cough or sore throat is common due to the breathing tube used during surgery. This should pass within 48 hours.

  • Appetite: Offer a small amount of their normal food (or a sensitive diet if provided). Their appetite should return fully within 24 hours.

  • The Green Bandage: If your dog has a small green bandage on their front leg, please remove it once you are home.

2. Protecting the Surgical Site

  • No Licking: You must prevent your dog from licking the wound. Use the Buster Collar (cone) or Medical Pet Shirt provided. Licking causes infection and can open the wound.

  • Daily Checks: Check the wound (belly for spays, scrotal area for castrates) twice daily. Look for swelling, discharge, or bleeding.

  • Dressing: If there is an adhesive dressing, you can remove it if it starts to peel off. Otherwise, we will remove it at the 3-day check.

3. House Rules: The 10-Day Rest
We know it is hard to keep an active dog quiet, but it is necessary for safety.

  • Strict Rest: No running, jumping, or rough play for 10 days.

  • Leash Only: Your dog must be on a lead at all times when outside, even in the garden for toileting.

  • Walks: Short lead walks (10 mins max) are permitted twice a day only.

4. When to Call Us (Red Flags)
Please contact us immediately if you notice vomiting, extreme lethargy, or issues with the wound.
