Microchipping Laws in the UK: What Pet Owners Need to Know
Microchipping is the fastest way to reunite lost pets with their families—and in England it’s a legal requirement for both dogs and cats.
What the law says (England)
Dogs: compulsory microchipping has been in place for years.
Cats: as of 10 June 2024, owned cats must be microchipped before 20 weeks of age, and owner details must be kept up‑to‑date on an approved database. Non‑compliance can lead to a notice to microchip within 21 days and fines up to £500. Sources: GOV.UK – Cat microchipping now mandatory, GOV.UK – Microchipping for cats becomes compulsory.
How microchipping works
A tiny chip, about a grain of rice, is placed under the skin (typically between the shoulder blades).
It carries a unique number that links to your contact details on a secure database.
Vets, rescue centres, and animal wardens can scan and contact you if your pet is found.
Keeping details up‑to‑date
Moving house or changing phone number? Update the database immediately. This is a legal requirement and critical for reunions.
Not sure which database your pet is on? We can help you find and update it.
Does it hurt?
It’s quick—similar to a standard injection. Many pets barely notice it. We can microchip during other visits (e.g., vaccinations, neutering) for convenience.
Costs and benefits
Typically around the cost of a routine consultation; it’s a one‑time procedure with lifetime identification.
Increases the chance of a safe, fast reunion if your pet goes missing.
Helps rescue teams distinguish owned pets from strays.
